At the heart of your organisation are people. Its success originates in them and their ability to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. Besides bringing in their know-how and experience, your people are your single most powerful source of ideas.
Organisational creativity refers to the capacity of your organisation to actively tap into your workforce’s ingenuity and resourcefulness and turn ground-breaking ideas into reality. In a stable and predictable environment much of an organisations’ focus revolves around efficiency and perfection. But in a world that is complex, volatile and everchanging, leadership also needs to invest a lot of energy in transformation and innovation and they need to ensure flexibility of thinking.
Creativity starts with taking a systemic approach, looking at all aspects that impact the organisational ability to apply creativity effectively, meaning capabilities, climate, systems and leadership. These key components drive your Idea-Value-Chain and should be top priority in all corners of the organisation.
A powerful start is to ask yourself some reflective questions:
— In what ways do we support our people in acquiring the right skills critical in developing creative aptitude and cognitive flexibility?
— Is our organisational climate conducive to innovation? If not, where are the obstacles?
— What structures, processes and tools are in place to embed and manage creativity and turn it into tangible results? How effective and accessible are they?
— How ready is our leadership to make it happen?
As an old Chinese proverb states "the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."
